Super 30 Review: A Film That Brings Anand Kumar's Superheroism To The Fore

Most Indians’, okay okay most lower middle class people, only hope and route to a better life, is education. But higher education which is necessary to claim the biggest packages remains the privilege of a few. How, I say how, everyone can afford education where they have to spend lakhs of rupees just to write an entrance examination? This is where Anand Kumar, the mathematics whiz comes into picture. He turned an unfulfilled dream into a fulfilled reality for hundreds of kids. 

A son of a king couldn’t become a king. Or have kingly qualities. The raw diamonds hidden in the dust must be unearthed. Not a single diamond manifest itself to the world. Some behind the scenes action must be there. Someone has to work to bring the genius to the notice of the world. Like an event which occurs without an observer can never be called an event (because it might not have happened too because none has seen it). 

Similarly, if and only if the means is provided, we can see the wunderkinder from the underprivileged can be unleashed. You know Anand Kumar? You know that he teaches year after year 30 students without taking a penny (of course not single-handedly) and help them clear the prestigious IIT JEE examination which is their ticket not only to better world class higher education (professional education at that) but also to better life?

Buckle your seatbelts. We’re going to experience a bumpy ride - the journey of Anand Kumar from himself being an underdog to a teacher par excellence with Super 30 review.

Writing and direction

Vikas Bahl’s direction is to the point. He didn’t add unnecessary commercial elements to the film. But like a good filmmaker should he took a handful of dramatic liberties and brought tension element to the narration. But all this is done organically. With the help of the writer (Sanjeev Dutta) he created an intriguing narrative frame in the traditional underdog template. The real life Anand Kumar’s success is so dramatic and inspiring in itself that mere highlight reels from his life are enough of material and the writer director duo did a splendid of making it into a coherent plot.

The dialogues don’t stand out much as they are not written to create effect but to advance the narration. But few of the gems are worth taking notice of. 

• Raja ka beta raja nahi banega, Raja wahi banega jo haqdar hoga.
• Aapattise aavishkar ka janm hota hain.

Of course we know these quotes. But uttered by the lead actor Hrithik Roshan in his best acting performance in the last half decade make them even more memorable. The screenplay used the classic three act structure. The ups and downs in the life of Anand Kumar are captured with required dramatic heft. Rather hearteningly, they focused on Anand Kumar’s steadfast resolve in making higher education accessible to the underprivileged children of our society.

The performances

When it comes to the performances, the kids who played the students of the eponymous Super 30 programme stand out. They as driven as the real students of Anand Kumar and brought a viral life force to the proceedings. Not a single kid could be singled out to say he/she failed to capture the emotions. They’re are Anand Kumar’s handpicked students (yes, he really handpicks underprivileged students who have the spark to be able to succeed in IIT JEE). Full stop. You want to hug each and everyone of them by the end of the film.

Pankaj Tripathi as the politically influential villain in a short screen time makes a mark. Mrunal Thakur has her moments to shine as the love interest of Anand Kumar. Aditya Srivastav as Lallan Singh, Virendra Saxena as Kumar’s father Ishwar and Nandish Sandhu as his brother Pranav Kumar... all did well to make their characters tick.

The crew

The songs are fantastic to listen to alongside the visuals. The background score is great but sometimes feel like a sore thumb by dominating the action. You may miss a few dialogues because of these excessive sounds. The cinematographer Anay Goswami is the real champ. The visuals are full of life and earthy. He has captured the spirit of the world of Anand Kumar. 

The editing by the experienced hand A. Sreekar Prasad is sharp and trendy. He managed to give the proceedings a slickness despite the lengthy runtime (the second half). The production design is first rate. The locations and art work are authentic. The production values are worthy of a film by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and Reliance Entertainment. Super 30 is backed by highly sophisticated filmmaking. 

Finally

Super30 is a well manipulated, well acted, deftly handled emotional tale of Anand Kumar who initiated the great programme. Hrithik nailed the character is an understatement. The kids are terrific. But this reviewer still don’t (and can’t) get why Hrithik's given that makeup? An Agnipath styling would have worked even better. Leave aside these ramblings, the movie is a screamer! Don’t miss it.

• Second half is a bit lengthy
• Do we really need that styling to Hrithik Roshan? Are the makers telling that people from that background couldn't be Greekgods? ;-)

Super 30 Box Office Collection Day 14: Hrithik Roshan's hit film earns Rs 160 crore globally

Super 30 box office collection: Hrithik Roshan's latest offering Super 30 has completed two weeks at the box office and the film is still trending at the ticket windows. Trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh yesterday mentioned that Super 30 had performed better than big Bollywood releases like Salman Khan's Bharat, Akshay Kumar's Kesari and Ranveer Singh's Gully  Boy in the second week. Super 30 has earned nearly Rs 35 crore in Week 2. Based on the life of Patna-based mathematician Anand Kuamar, the film has minted Rs 110. 68 crore till now. The film has comfortably survived infront of Shahid Kapoor's blockbuster Kabir Singh and Disney's The Lion King to emerge as a 'hit'. From today onwards, the film will also clash with Kangana Ranaut's much-hyped Judgementall Hai Kya and Arjun Kapoor's Arjun Patiala at the silver-screen.

Super 30 is Hrithik Roshan's one of the latest biggest hits after Krish 3 (2013), Kaabil (2017) and Bang Bang (2014) that have crossed Rs 100-crore mark. Super 30 has been hailed by audience in India and overseas. Super 30 has has raked in Rs 160 crore worldwide so far. Region-wise, the film has earned Rs 32.55 crore in Mumbai circuit and Rs 21.39  in Delhi and UP circuits. Internationally, Super 30 has minted Rs 28.93 crore. This Vikas Bahl directorial has become favorite of politicians as well. From Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia to Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, the film has earned plaudits from several political leaders. The film has also been exempted from the GST in four states (Bihar, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat) and the national capital.
